The Mithila Studies Network is an international, interdisciplinary scholarly network dedicated to the study of the languages, literatures, religions, histories, and cultures of Mithila, a region of the eastern Gangetic plains straddling the India-Nepal border and home to a rich and distinctive civilisation that remains underrepresented in the global academy.

The network was founded in 2022 by Coralynn V. Davis, Christopher L. Diamond, and Pranav Prakash with the aim of cultivating rigorous, inclusive, and critical scholarship on Mithila and its peoples. Drawing together scholars from across the humanities and social sciences, and from institutions around the world, we understand Mithila Studies as a new field of inquiry, one that resists parochialism and engages the full complexity of the region’s past and present, including its marginalised voices and communities.

Our Work

The network convenes scholars across disciplines and institutions through symposia, workshops, and intensive research institutes. We support collaborative publication projects, facilitate connections between researchers at different career stages, and work to build the infrastructures of a new field, including shared bibliographic resources, a curated events calendar, and open-access publishing initiatives. Our goal is not only to advance knowledge of Mithila but to demonstrate the ways that sustained, interdisciplinary attention to the region can generate new questions and frameworks with wider significance across the humanities and social sciences.
